Johnston Street
Rationale
Our Johnston Street design takes cue from the industrial surroundings, retaining the essence of the rapidly changing Collingwood. The Architecture re-interprets the modernist industrial design, moving away from the heaviness of rough and rustic old factories.
The industrial style is redefined by the use of glass and linear dark steel ribs. These materials provide a sober and elegant facade treatment that can effortlessly coexist with the existing fine grain and heritage facades within the neighbourhood.
Rhythm and articulation are achieved through the depth and different densities of the dark steel elements. To add visual interest, the breaks and edges of the building are highlighted through splashes of gold cladding and the appearance of greenery softens the reticulated design providing an organic feel.
The proposal encourages more sustainable transport methods with end of trip facilities. In addition, it emphasises on the use of natural light and cross-ventilation, providing open generous internal spaces paired with ample roof terraces.
